World Oceans Day
World Oceans Day, a global celebration on June 8, that focuses on the protection of our oceans and calls for action to protect them. This is the time to ask our own Brunotti teamrider and ambassador of the Plastic Soup Foundation Dorian van Rijsselberghe everything about his experiences as an ambassador and why it is so important to make our oceans plastic-free.
What is the Plastic Soup Foundation?
''The Plastic Soup Foundation takes action against all the plastic in the oceans and tries to reduce this enormous amount as much as possible. The foundation does this through collaborations with companies that have an environmental impact and by supporting and starting initiatives to clean up the plastic.''
When and why did you become an ambassador to the Plastic Soup Foundation?
''I became ambassador in 2011 because I saw more and more plastic in the oceans and I wanted to contribute to the battle against all this plastic. Especially when I am windsurfing, it is a thorn in the eye for me! One of the low points was the bay in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympic Games. That bay was really polluted! With the Plastic Soup Foundation I hope to call more attention to this problem.''
You are one of the founders of Plastic Soup Junior. Why is it so important to make children aware of the plastic soup?
''I think it is important to make children aware from an early age of where plastic belongs and where it doesn't, and the impact plastic has on the environment: birds choke on it and fish eat it. Think about it: that means the plastic is being eaten by what we are eating ourselves! That's something you would want to fix, right?''
What are you doing yourself to keep the oceans clean?
''When I am surfing and have the possibility to put a piece of floating plastic in my suit, I always do it. If it is that easy and the waste bin is close, why wouldn't you clean it up?''
If you could change one thing about the plastic soup, what would it be?
''Make it go away, haha? Making it disappear is number one, but I would also like to make people more aware of the fact that plastic is far from ideal!''
What can we do to protect our oceans? Do you have any tips?
''It starts with separating your household waste and, of course, by not throwing any trash on the street, the beach or in the water.''
